“WELCOME TO SHIMAJIMA” by SHIMA MUSIC
A pause for me to write a few words about the album Welcome To Shimajima before you can hear about the special world in the new album she created with the Mix of many different sounds, from the life of the people, traditional props, and the sound of modern equipment…
Welcome…Are geographical and cultural distances still important? Or is the connection between soul and soul, spirit and spirit, feeling the soul through sound, something that transcends all language and cultural barriers? A chance encounter during this photoshoot between my colleagues and artist Shima, to create the visuals for this album. Our memory is using props that Shima brought from Japan, combined with props that she bought from souvenir shops when she had a few days of sightseeing in Vietnam.
These include fans, lanterns, colorful fabrics… A little bit of everything. More specifically, the costumes she brought represent who she is, her culture, a reminder of her country… From those props, we combined them to create these photos. Linked to the audio that Shima has performed throughout her new album to keep the sound energy lingering in the photos. I think of the connection in the spirit of Flaming Asia – a name I use for all the connections with artists through the work and research of Chiron Duong. This resonance is both vibrant and alive, but also full of emotions. The identification here is definitely emotional.
In “Flaming Asia”, it would be incomplete if we only focused on the visual impression and forgot the emotions in these photos. It is similar to the way I think about the East, on the one hand very rich in color, material, sound, light… but at the same time very deep, meaningful, philosophical, emotional, specific to the East…
